AC leak causing black mold, dangerous for toddler's allergies?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a bunch of small black spots in the corner that won’t scrub out. My wife is worried it's making our toddler's allergies worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with a store-bought spray, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

That black spotting is almost certainly mold, and it's a common result from AC condensate leaks in Dubai's climate. The constant humidity and condensation create an ideal environment for it to grow. Given your toddler's worsening allergies, it's a legitimate concern.

Store-bought bleach or anti-mold sprays are a temporary surface fix. They won't address the mold growing deep within the carpet fibers or the underlying padding, which is likely saturated if the leak has persisted for weeks. The AC unit itself may also harbor mold in its drip pan or ducts, which continues to spread spores.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), a thorough DIY cleaning with a proper fungicide might suffice. However, your situation involves a leak source and a porous material like carpet, which elevates the risk. The only way to know the extent and type of mold is through professional inspection and possibly lab testing. This is particularly important for children, as certain species can trigger more severe allergic reactions and respiratory issues.

The recommended course is to first stop the leak by having an AC technician service the unit. Then, engage a professional remediation company that can properly assess the damage. They have the tools to measure moisture deep in the carpet and slab, remove contaminated materials correctly, and verify with testing that the space is truly clean and safe. For health and effectiveness, a professional assessment is the prudent choice here.
