Should I take my family to a doctor for mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and waking up with stuffy noses for the past few weeks. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in the living room and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We’ve lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed this. Is this the kind of black mold that’s really dangerous, and should I take my family to a doctor to get checked out?

Black mold is a broad term for many species; its color alone doesn't define its danger. The symptoms you describe in your children—persistent coughing and nighttime congestion—are very common reactions to mold exposure, especially in a confined space like an apartment.

In a humid climate like Dubai's, where AC systems run year-round, hidden condensation leaks behind walls or furniture are a frequent cause of such mold growth. The Marina's proximity to the water can exacerbate indoor humidity levels.

You should consult a doctor to discuss these symptoms. While most mold exposure causes allergic reactions and irritation, a physician can evaluate your family's specific health and rule out other causes. They may recommend treatments to alleviate the respiratory discomfort.

The priority, however, is to stop the ongoing exposure. Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as this can aerosolize spores. This situation requires a professional inspection to identify the moisture source (likely a condensate drain leak from the AC) and safely remediate the mold. In Dubai, look for providers who follow DM and DHA guidelines and can provide verifiable, post-remediation lab results to confirm the air quality is safe.
