How to safely remove black mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and the smell is really musty. What's the best way to get rid of this safely, and should I be worried about it spreading through the AC?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is a common issue in Dubai, especially on exterior walls where temperature differences cause condensation. That trapped moisture, combined with organic materials like cotton clothes or cardboard boxes, creates an ideal environment for mold.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can often handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and consider sealing it with plastic sheeting to prevent spores from dispersing. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a solution of white vinegar. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture source. Dry the area completely immediately after cleaning with a fan or dehumidifier.

The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. For an exterior wall in the UAE's climate, this is likely condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot outside wall. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the door ajar periodically. A small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet can help control humidity.

You should be concerned about it spreading through the AC if the closet is connected to a return air vent, as spores can be drawn into the system. Check if the musty smell is present when the AC is running. If the mold returns after cleaning, covers a large area, or you suspect HVAC contamination, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and air or surface sampling to identify the mold type and confirm if the HVAC system is affected, which requires a specific remediation protocol.
