How to clean and prevent mold around AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making our whole bedroom feel damp, and I’ve just spotted some black speckles around the vent on the ceiling. It’s been like this since the humidity really kicked in last month. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and run the AC constantly. What’s the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back without having to call maintenance for every little thing?

The damp feeling and black speckles around your AC vent are classic signs of condensation and mold growth, a very common issue in older Dubai buildings due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The dampness occurs when warm, humid air meets the cold surface of the AC duct, creating the perfect wet environment for mold spores to grow.
For immediate cleaning, ensure the AC is turned off. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the visible speckles on the vent cover and surrounding ceiling with a cloth dipped in a solution of white vinegar or a mild detergent. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can irritate your airways without killing the root structure. Remove the vent cover and clean both sides thoroughly, allowing it to dry completely before reattaching. Preventing its return requires managing moisture. First, check that your AC unit’s drain line is not clogged; a blocked line causes excess moisture to back up into the system and ducts. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, even when you're out, to avoid frequent cycling that promotes condensation. Using a dehumidifier in the bedroom alongside the AC can significantly reduce ambient moisture levels. However, visible mold on the vent often indicates a larger problem within the ductwork itself, which is impossible to properly address without professional tools. Recurring mold points to a contaminated system that requires a full inspection and cleaning. In such cases, especially in multi-unit buildings, it's best to notify building maintenance for a comprehensive solution. For health safety and to identify the mold type, a professional assessment with lab testing is the most reliable course of action. |
