Black dust from AC vent making kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah seems to be making my two young kids cough constantly, and I just found patches of black dust around the vent in their bedroom. We’ve been running it non-stop since the weather got really hot a couple of months ago. What’s the fastest way to get this professionally tested and cleaned to make sure it's safe for them?

Black dust around AC vents in Dubai is a common sign of mould growth, often caused by the combination of humidity and condensation from constant cooling. This can definitely cause respiratory irritation, especially in young children.

The fastest and most definitive way to identify the problem is a professional indoor air quality inspection that includes surface and air sampling. The samples are then cultured in a microbiology lab to identify the specific mould species present and the concentration of spores in the air your children are breathing. This is a critical step, as it determines if the mould is a common irritant or a more problematic type, guiding the correct remediation strategy.

For a villa in Jumeirah, do not attempt a DIY clean with store-bought chemicals. This often disperses spores throughout the room, making the problem worse. A proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and thoroughly cleaning the entire AC ductwork system, not just the visible vent.

Look for a provider that is DHA-approved and can provide documented before-and-after lab results to verify the air is safe. Given the climate and your children's symptoms, this is a case where professional assessment and remediation are strongly advised to restore a healthy indoor environment.
