Black mold behind wallpaper in AC room: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC in the bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last few weeks and now I’ve just peeled back the corner of the wallpaper to find a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. What’s the fastest way to deal with this ourselves, or is it too serious and I need to call a professional company?

That black fuzz behind the wallpaper is a significant sign of a moisture issue that needs immediate attention. Given the constant humidity in Dubai and the fact your AC has been leaking, this is a serious situation. The wall cavity is likely saturated, and the mold growth is probably more extensive than what's visible.

For a patch larger than about one square meter, or any growth caused by contaminated AC water, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The leak must be fixed first; no cleaning will be effective if the water source remains. A professional will use moisture meters to map the full extent of the dampness inside the wall, which is critical.

DIY attempts on a problem of this scale often spread spores and fail to address the root moisture, leading to rapid regrowth. In the UAE's climate, improper remediation can make the problem worse. Professionals follow DM and DHA guidelines for containment, removal, and disposal to prevent cross-contamination.

The fastest way to resolve this is to call a certified mold inspector. They can diagnose the source, assess the spread, and provide a protocol for safe remediation, which often involves removing the affected drywall and insulation. For verification, always request a post-remediation viability test from an independent lab to confirm the mold is no longer active.
