Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or call Dubai landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s on the side that faces the outside of the building and it feels slightly damp. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call my landlord in Dubai immediately?

Given the location on an exterior wall and the dampness, this is likely due to condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid outside air, a very common issue in Dubai.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach is possible. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar or baking soda solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push the mould deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. The critical step is to dry the area completely with a fan or dehumidifier afterward to prevent immediate regrowth. However, you should inform your landlord immediately. Under typical Dubai rental contracts, the landlord is responsible for investigating and rectifying the root cause of moisture intrusion, which is a structural issue. The dampness suggests a potential thermal bridge or insufficient insulation in that wall. Simply cleaning the visible mould will not stop it from returning if the underlying condensation problem is not addressed. For a problem of this nature, a professional inspection is advisable to identify the exact moisture source. A certified inspector can use a thermal imaging camera to pinpoint the condensation spot and a moisture meter to assess the wall’s saturation level. This provides your landlord with the evidence needed to undertake the proper repairs, which may involve adding insulation or sealing the exterior. If the mould returns after your cleaning attempt or the patch is larger, professional remediation that includes containment and air scrubbing will be necessary to properly resolve it. |
