Black mold in wardrobe: urgent professional treatment needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our family villa in Jumeirah has this weird black speckling in the wardrobe of the master bedroom. We only just spotted it behind the boxes while doing our deep-clean before Ramadan. I’m worried it’s from all the humidity we’ve had lately and my husband’s asthma has been acting up. Is this something we need to get treated professionally like, tomorrow, or is it okay to handle ourselves after the holidays?

That black speckling is likely mould, and given Dubai's high humidity and your husband's asthma, it should be addressed with some urgency.
Mould thrives in the enclosed, often poorly ventilated spaces of wardrobes, especially on exterior walls where condensation can form. The recent humid weather creates the perfect conditions for this. For someone with asthma, exposure to mould spores can significantly aggravate symptoms, causing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. You need to determine if this is a surface-level issue or a sign of a deeper problem. For a small area (less than one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself using a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, if the mould has penetrated the wood or the drywall, or if it covers a larger area, DIY cleaning will only address the surface and it will return. Given the health concern and the villa's construction, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—whether it's condensation, a hidden leak, or humidity from the en-suite bathroom—and assess the extent of the growth. Proper remediation involves containing the area, safely removing affected materials if necessary, and addressing the root cause to prevent recurrence. This is not typically a same-day emergency, but scheduling an assessment soon is wise to prevent further spread and protect your husband's health. You can manage the immediate risk by keeping the wardrobe door open to improve air circulation until it can be properly addressed. |
