Urgent to treat black mold in Dubai apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has developed these black speckles on the back wall, and the musty smell is giving me a headache every morning. It started getting worse after the heavy dew we had a couple of weeks ago. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, and can I just clean it myself with vinegar in the meantime?

The black speckles and musty smell indicate active mould growth, which is a health concern that should be addressed promptly. Given your headaches, it is urgent to stop the exposure. The recent dew provided the perfect humidity spike for mould to flourish, a common issue in Dubai's climate where indoor condensation is a year-round battle.

Do not clean it with vinegar. Vinegar is a mild acid that may temporarily clean the surface but will not kill the mould roots (hyphae) penetrating the porous drywall. It can also leave behind moisture, potentially worsening the problem. Bleach is also not recommended as it can release harmful fumes and does not address the root cause.

The priority is identifying and fixing the moisture source. In a closet, it's often condensation from a cold exterior wall or a hidden plumbing leak. Until a professional assesses it, improve airflow by moving items away from the wall and using a portable dehumidifier or a fan in the room. Keep the closet door open to reduce stagnant, humid air.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters to find the water source and assess the extent of growth, which is often worse inside the wall cavity. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. In many cases, a lab test is not needed for visible growth, but it can identify the species if there are specific health concerns.

Ultimately, a DIY approach risks inadequate containment, spreading spores, and the problem quickly returning. Professional treatment ensures it is resolved safely and effectively.
