What's the best dehumidifier for a Dubai bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has had a persistent damp smell for a couple of months, but after last week's heavy dew, I finally found black speckles on a few of my leather bags and shoes. We keep the AC running, but it's clearly not enough in that enclosed space. What's the most effective way to treat this and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber would you guys recommend specifically for a Dubai closet to stop it from coming back?

That black speckling on leather is a clear sign of high humidity, likely from condensation forming on the cooler interior wall. Running the AC lowers overall home humidity, but enclosed, unventilated spaces like closets are notorious dead zones where moist air gets trapped.
For a closet, a compact electric dehumidifier is the most effective solution. Look for a mini or desktop model with a capacity between 500ml to 1 litre, as they are designed for small, enclosed spaces. A unit with auto-shutoff is essential for safety. These are more effective and less maintenance than disposable moisture absorbers, which would saturate too quickly in Dubai's climate. Place the dehumidifier inside the closet, ensuring nothing blocks its air intake. You'll need to empty its water reservoir regularly, likely every few days depending on conditions. For a more permanent, set-and-forget solution, a ventilated dehumidifying cabinet is an excellent choice for storing leather goods, though it is a larger investment. However, the damp smell suggests a persistent issue. The mould on the surface is only the visible part; the root cause is the moisture. Before treating, a professional inspection can identify if the condensation is due to a lack of vapour barrier in the wall or another underlying issue. Remediation involves cleaning the affected items with appropriate leather-safe products and addressing the wall itself to prevent recurrence. For health safety and to ensure the problem is fully resolved, this is often a case where professional assessment is recommended. |
