Is black mold in my apartment making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold that's been spreading on the ceiling above our shower in our Jumeirah apartment. It started as a small patch after the humid weather last month, but now it’s gotten way worse and the musty smell is always there. Should I be worried about their health, and is it better to just call a professional cleaning company or is this something my landlord has to fix?

Yes, it very well could be. The persistent cough and musty smell are strong indicators that the mold is a likely irritant. In Dubai's humid climate, bathrooms are prime locations for mold growth due to constant condensation from showers and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials.

Black mold growth, especially when it's actively spreading, releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air. These are known irritants that can cause coughing, congestion, sore throats, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms, particularly in children whose respiratory systems are more sensitive.

Your landlord is typically responsible for fixing the underlying cause, which is likely inadequate ventilation or a leak. Under Dubai's rental laws, structural maintenance and issues affecting habitability fall on the landlord. You should notify them in writing immediately.

However, for a confirmed health concern, do not wait. The cleaning required is beyond surface wiping; it needs to address the root moisture issue and safely remove the contaminated material to prevent spores from spreading. A professional inspection can identify the exact moisture source and the mold species. Remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to make the area safe again. For your children's health, a professional assessment is the most reliable course of action.
