Can black mold by AC vent wait a few weeks?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s right next to the AC vent and the room has felt more humid than usual lately. Given how bad the humidity has been this summer, is this something I need to get treated immediately or can it wait a few weeks for my next paycheck?

Black mold by an AC vent is a sign of excess moisture and should not be ignored for weeks. The combination of high humidity and condensation from your AC unit creates an ideal environment for mold to grow and potentially spread inside the wall cavity or ductwork.

Immediate action is recommended. For now, you can reduce the room's humidity by ensuring your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature (e.g., 22-24°C) and running it continuously to minimize condensation cycles. Wipe down any visible condensation around the vent and improve air circulation with a fan. Do not attempt to scrub the mold yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen indoor air quality.

The proximity to the vent suggests the issue could be internal, possibly from a clogged condensate drain line or poor insulation around the cooling coils. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source, which is the only way to solve the problem permanently. In Dubai’s climate, delaying remediation often allows the situation to expand, increasing the scope and cost of the fix later. A proper assessment will determine if this is a surface issue or requires deeper remediation.
