Bathroom ceiling mold in Dubai: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed the paint on the bathroom ceiling is starting to bubble and there's a small patch of black mold. It’s the bathroom with the shower, and we don't have a window in there. We always use the exhaust fan, but the humidity is just relentless. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach spray, or should I call a professional company for an inspection, and what would that roughly cost in Dubai?

Bathroom ceiling mold in Dubai's climate is extremely common due to the relentless high humidity, especially in windowless bathrooms where condensation builds up on cooler ceiling surfaces. The paint bubbling confirms moisture is trapped behind it.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be effective. Use a dedicated mold remover spray or a solution of white vinegar, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots penetrating porous surfaces like drywall or paint. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then repaint with a mold-inhibiting primer and paint. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Run your exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it is actually venting properly—many older apartment fans simply recirculate air. Wiping down wet surfaces immediately also helps.

If the mold covers a larger area, has returned after a previous cleaning, or you smell a persistent musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. This is because the moisture may be originating from a leak in the plumbing above or poor insulation, issues a DIY fix cannot solve. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of water. The cost for an inspection in Dubai varies based on the company's credentials and the apartment's size; you would need to request an assessment. The key is to choose a provider that offers a detailed report with findings and clear remediation steps, not just a quick cleaning service.
