Black mold in closet causing coughs: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is against the outer wall. It’s been so humid lately that our windows are constantly fogged up in the morning. Is this something I can tackle with vinegar and a scrub brush, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai to check it out properly?

The black spots combined with the coughs and high humidity point to a likely mold issue that needs more than a DIY approach. In Dubai's climate, constant AC use creates cold surfaces, and with outdoor humidity often above 80%, condensation forms on walls and windows—especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets against exterior walls. This is a perfect breeding ground for mold.

Using vinegar on visible spots is a temporary fix for a very small, surface-level problem. It does not address the root cause, which is excess moisture trapped within the wall or coming from a hidden leak. More critically, scrubbing disturbed mold can release a high concentration of spores into the air, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms.

A professional inspection is advised here. The goal is to identify the moisture source—whether it's condensation, a leaking pipe, or seepage from outside—and assess the extent of the growth, which is often more widespread behind walls. Reputable inspectors use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint problems without destructive probing. They can also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to determine the mold species, which informs the necessary safety precautions and remediation method. This diagnostic step is crucial for resolving the issue permanently and ensuring your indoor air is safe, particularly with children experiencing coughs.
