Found mold in bedroom; what's the first step?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and we can't figure out why. I just pulled out a storage box from the corner of our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah and found the back wall behind it is covered in black and green fuzzy patches. It's been extra humid the last few weeks and I'm panicking that this is the cause. What's the first thing I should do and can anyone recommend a reliable mold inspection company that does a thorough test for air quality?

The first step is to isolate the area and avoid disturbing the mold. Do not attempt to wipe or spray it yourself, as this can release a high concentration of spores into the air, which your children are likely breathing. Close the door to that room and limit access. Since the mold is visible and extensive, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and identify the moisture source.
In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold behind furniture, inside walls from condensation, or under carpets. The recent humid weather has exacerbated this. The inspection should include a moisture mapping of the affected wall and adjacent areas to find the root cause, which could be a small leak or simply condensation from the temperature differential with the AC. For a reliable inspection, look for a provider that uses a combination of visual assessment, moisture meters, and most importantly, air quality testing. The air sample should be analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the types and concentrations of spores present. This data is crucial, as it determines the required scope of remediation and confirms if the mold is the likely irritant causing your children's nighttime coughing. Companies with their own labs can provide this analysis faster, often within 48 hours. |
