Safely removing black mold with kids in the house?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I've just discovered black mold along the baseboards of their bedroom wall. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I'm worried the humidity from the recent weather has made it worse. What’s the most effective and safe way to get rid of this, especially with young children in the house?

The black mold you've found is likely Stachybotrys, which can produce irritants that worsen respiratory symptoms like coughing, especially in children. The high humidity we've had recently accelerates its growth behind walls and under floors, particularly in villas near coastal areas like Jumeirah.
For a small, visible patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Use a solution of diluted white vinegar or a detergent, not bleach, as bleach doesn't kill the roots and its fumes are problematic for children. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dried with a fan afterwards. Isolate the room during cleaning and keep children away until all surfaces are dry and any dust has settled. However, given that the mold is on baseboards—which are often a symptom of a larger moisture problem hidden within the wall cavity—and due to the health of your kids, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls for hidden growth, which is common here due to condensation from AC systems and rising damp. The most effective remediation for a confirmed case involves source identification, containment of the area with negative air pressure to prevent spores spreading, safe removal of contaminated materials, and HEPA vacuuming. Always verify the company provides before-and-after lab reports to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels. For ongoing prevention, maintain indoor humidity below 60% with dehumidifiers and ensure your AC units are serviced regularly to prevent condensation buildup. |
