Best local product to remove and prevent bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. The humid weather lately has been brutal, and I think the bathroom's exhaust fan isn't powerful enough to handle it. What's the best local product I can pick up at a store like Ace Hardware to kill this safely and prevent it from coming back?

For a small patch of black mold in a bathroom, a common and effective product available at Ace Hardware or similar stores is a chlorine-based mold and mildew remover spray. Look for one that states it is for bathroom use and contains sodium hypochlorite. This is effective at killing surface mold on non-porous tiles and grout.

The key is proper application. Wear gloves and ensure the room is well-ventilated. Spray the area, let the product sit for the time specified on the label (usually 10-15 minutes) to allow it to penetrate and kill the mold at the root, then scrub and rinse thoroughly. Do not mix cleaning products, especially with bleach.

To prevent recurrence, the underlying humidity issue must be addressed. In Dubai's climate, an exhaust fan that runs during and for at least 20-30 minutes after a shower is essential. If the fan is weak, upgrading to a higher-capacity model is a permanent solution. Wiping down wet surfaces after use and occasionally running a dehumidifier in the bathroom can also help measurably reduce moisture.

If the mold patch is larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the growth may be behind the tiles or in the ceiling. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture mapping is recommended to find and resolve the hidden source of water intrusion.
