How to remove curtain mold and control humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found along the bottom edge of our bedroom curtains in our Jumeirah Park villa. We run the AC constantly, but the room still feels a bit damp, and this is the second time it’s appeared since last winter. What’s the best way to clean this off the fabric safely and what can I do to control the humidity to stop it from coming back?

For fabric like curtains, first address the moisture source or the mold will return. The dampness is likely from condensation where cold air from the AC meets the warm room air, a common issue in Dubai's climate.

To clean the curtain, take it down outdoors. Gently brush off the dry mold spores. For washable fabrics, a hot wash with a detergent containing a mould-killing agent like bleach (if the fabric allows) is effective. For dry-clean-only curtains, professional cleaning is necessary to treat the mold properly. Never attempt to clean mold with a damp cloth, as this can spread the spores.

To control the humidity, your AC should be set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to reduce the extreme differential that causes condensation. Ensure the unit's condensate drain line is not blocked, as this can cause excess moisture. For a persistent damp feeling, a standalone dehumidifier in the room can help maintain a relative humidity level below 60%, which inhibits mold growth.

Since this is a recurring issue and your children are experiencing symptoms, the mold on the curtain may be part of a larger problem. Condensation can indicate high relative humidity in the room's structure. A professional inspection with moisture meters can identify hidden dampness in walls or behind units, and air quality testing can determine the spore count to assess the overall impact on your indoor health.
