How to permanently remove black mold from AC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of months, and now I've found a patch of black mold on the back wall behind my wardrobe. I've been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat that clears up once I'm at work. I'm really worried it's making me sick. How do I properly get rid of this for good without it just coming back?

The mold on your wall is likely caused by the AC condensation leak, and your symptoms are a common reaction. Permanent removal requires fixing the source of moisture first; otherwise, it will return.

For a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move the wardrobe to fully expose the area. Scrub the mold off the wall with a solution of detergent and water. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning.

However, the critical step is addressing the AC leak, which is the root cause. This is often due to a clogged condensate drain line, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where ACs run constantly. A certified HVAC technician should inspect and clear the drain line and repair any issues to prevent future leaks and condensation buildup.

The mold behind the wardrobe suggests the leak has been ongoing, and there is a high probability of additional mold growth inside the AC unit itself or the ductwork, which you cannot see or clean yourself. This hidden contamination will continue to spread spores and cause symptoms. A professional inspection with borescope cameras and subsequent remediation is strongly recommended to ensure the entire system is addressed. Post-remediation verification, such as air quality testing, can confirm the environment is safe.
