How to properly remove black mold behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and I'm worried it's been there a while because my husband's been waking up with a stuffy nose. What's the best way to get rid of this properly, and should I call our building management first or a professional cleaning company?

The black spots behind the wardrobe are likely mold, which thrives on the condensation that forms when your cold interior wall meets Dubai's humid outdoor air. Your husband's stuffy nose is a common reaction to mold spores in the bedroom.

Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this will aerosolize the spores. The first call should be to your building management. In Dubai, the landlord or building owner is typically responsible for addressing the root cause, which is moisture penetration from outside. They need to inspect and seal the external wall.

Once the leak is fixed, the remediation can begin. For a spread this significant, a professional assessment is advised. They will contain the area, use HEPA-filtered air scrubbers, and safely remove the contaminated materials. Simply wiping it down or painting over it will fail, as the mold will return without addressing both the moisture source and the spores.

After remediation, ensure the area is completely dry and consider using a dehumidifier in the room to manage the indoor humidity that year-round AC use can create.
