How urgent is black mold near my baby's room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It wasn't there during my last cleaning a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have exploded. My main concern is our baby who sleeps in the room next door. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and is it safe for us to stay in the apartment until it's fixed?

This situation requires prompt professional assessment. Given the rapid appearance and proximity to an infant's sleeping area, it should be addressed within days, not weeks. Infants and children are more vulnerable to airborne mold spores, which can irritate developing respiratory systems.

The black patch indicates an active moisture issue, common in Dubai due to high humidity and temperature differentials that cause condensation inside walls. An interior wall suggests a possible hidden leak from plumbing or air conditioning drainage, or severe condensation buildup.

Until a professional can inspect, increase ventilation in the room by running the AC on dry mode and using a portable dehumidifier if available. Keep the closet door closed and avoid disturbing the mold, as this can release more spores into the air. It is generally safe to stay in the apartment, but limiting time in the affected bedroom is prudent.

A proper remediation involves identifying and fixing the moisture source first, then safely removing the contaminated materials. DIY cleaning often fails because it addresses the visible growth but not the root cause, leading to quick regrowth. For a case of this size and concern, a certified inspector can perform air quality testing to determine spore levels throughout the apartment, providing a clear picture of any risk to your baby.
