How to clean and prevent bedroom wall mold permanently?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Springs for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall in our master bedroom, right behind the headboard. It’s the wall that faces outside and we had a small leak during the heavy rains a couple of months ago that we thought was fixed. What's the most effective way to clean this and, more importantly, how can we stop the dampness from coming back for good so it doesn't just grow again?

The black spots are likely mold growth, a common issue in Dubai villas after water intrusion. The leak you repaired is the probable cause, as trapped moisture within the wall cavity creates an ideal environment for mold, especially with our high humidity and constant AC use.
For cleaning, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can remove surface mold on non-porous paint. However, scrubbing visible growth is only a temporary fix if the moisture source remains active inside the wall. Permanent prevention requires addressing the dampness. The wall must be fully dried. This often involves using industrial dehumidifiers and air movers, a process professionals call "structural drying," to extract moisture you cannot see. Simply wiping the surface is insufficient. You must also verify the exterior waterproofing and sealant on that wall are intact, as Dubai's heavy rains can exploit tiny cracks. For a case like this with prior water damage, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the exact extent of the dampness within the wall structure. Remediation typically involves removing the affected baseboard and potentially sections of drywall to allow proper drying and treatment of the cavity. Once the structure is dry and treated, repairs can be made with mold-resistant primers and paints. Without this comprehensive approach, the mold will almost certainly return. A science-driven company can provide documentation showing the moisture levels were returned to a normal range, which is the only verifiable proof the problem is solved. |
