How to safely remove closet mold and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bedroom closet that we barely use has started to smell really damp, and I just found a patch of black mold in the corner on the wall. It’s on an interior wall that faces the building’s corridor, and with the humidity lately, it just appeared out of nowhere. We keep the room’s AC off most of the time to save money. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely and what can we do to stop it from coming back, especially since we don't use that room daily?

For a small patch of black mold on a wall, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then wipe it down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Ensure the room is well-ventilated during the process.
The damp smell and sudden appearance point to excess moisture, not just surface dirt. The primary cause is likely the room's AC being off. In Dubai's climate, an un-air-conditioned room will have a much higher relative humidity than the rest of the home, leading to condensation on cooler surfaces like interior walls. This creates the perfect environment for mold. To prevent it from returning, you must control the humidity in that room. Run the AC on a dry/dehumidify mode for a few hours daily, even if you're not cooling it. This is the single most effective action. Also, leave the closet door ajar to promote air circulation and consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel inside it. If the mold covers a large area (more than one square meter), has a musty odour throughout the home, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to identify any hidden dampness within the wall and provide targeted remediation to address the root cause, not just the visible growth. |
