Can I clean black mold or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has these black splotches that have been slowly getting bigger since the weather got really humid a couple of weeks ago. It’s on an interior wall and I’m worried it’s spreading inside where I can’t see it. Is this something I can clean with a vinegar solution from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional company to check for moisture in the walls?

Black splotches on an interior wall during a humid period are a strong indicator of a mold colony. While surface cleaning with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution can remove the visible discoloration, it is a temporary fix that addresses the symptom, not the cause.
The primary concern in Dubai's climate is persistent hidden moisture, often from a small plumbing leak within the wall, condensation from an AC pipe, or rising damp from a compromised membrane. The mold you see is likely just the surface manifestation of a larger colony growing inside the wall cavity. Simply wiping the surface will not stop it from returning, often within weeks. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself while wearing a mask and ensuring good ventilation. However, if it's recurring, spreading, or covers a larger area, a professional assessment is necessary to locate and rectify the moisture source. Companies with thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters can pinpoint the exact origin of the water intrusion without destructive investigation. Remediation then involves repairing the leak, properly drying the structure, and removing the contaminated materials. Without this diagnostic step, the problem will almost certainly persist. |
