Should I get a professional for mold immediately?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall facing the outside. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the smell is really musty when I open the closet doors. My main concern is, is this something I need to get a professional to deal with immediately this week, or is it okay to monitor for a bit?

Given the location on an exterior wall during a period of high humidity, this is very likely active mold growth fueled by condensation. In the Dubai climate, this is a common issue where cool indoor air meets the heat from outside walls.

You should arrange for a professional inspection. The musty smell indicates potential spread you cannot see inside the wall cavity. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the exact source of the water intrusion and take an air or surface sample for a lab culture to identify the species. This is critical, as not all black-colored mold is the notorious "black mold" (Stachybotrys), but any growth can cause health issues like worsened allergies and respiratory irritation.

While you wait for the inspection, increase air circulation in the closet by leaving the doors open and pointing a fan towards the area. Do not attempt to scrub it, as this can aerosolize the spores and spread them. The inspector's report will tell you if the remediation is a simple cleanable surface issue or requires professional containment to prevent cross-contamination. For a situation involving an exterior wall and a musty odor, erring on the side of a professional assessment is the safest approach for your indoor air quality.
