Urgent to inspect mold in Dubai rental bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the exterior wall facing the marina. It's been extra humid lately and we run the AC constantly. I'm worried this is a bigger issue, but my landlord is saying it's not urgent. How quickly should we really get a professional mold inspection done here in Dubai?

That black patch on an exterior wall, especially during humid weather, suggests a condensation issue where cool indoor air meets the warm exterior wall. In Dubai's climate, this is a common source of hidden mold growth. It is urgent to investigate.

The landlord may dismiss it, but persistent mold indicates excess moisture that can degrade building materials. For a rental, document the issue with clear photos and a written notice to the landlord, citing your right to a habitable property under UAE tenancy law. This creates a formal record.

A professional inspection is advised within the next week or two. The goal is to identify the moisture source—whether it's a simple thermal bridge, a small leak in the wall, or a more significant issue. An inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the problem non-invasively. Without this, simply wiping the visible mold is a temporary fix; it will return if the underlying cause isn't addressed.

Given the location is your bedroom, where you spend hours sleeping, exposure to mold spores can irritate airways and worsen allergies. A lab test of a sample can identify the species, which helps assess potential health risks and guides the appropriate remediation method. Delaying could allow the problem to spread inside the wall cavity, making the eventual repair more extensive.
