Black mold causing family cough and headaches? Fast solution?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold growing in the corner of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It's right behind the toilet where the wall never seems to fully dry out, even with the exhaust fan on. I've been getting headaches myself and it's been getting worse since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. What's the fastest way to deal with this safely, and should I be taking my family to a doctor to get checked out?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation, which can cause the symptoms you describe. The persistent dampness behind the toilet suggests a deeper moisture problem that the exhaust fan alone isn't resolving.

For immediate safety, limit your family's exposure to the bathroom until it's addressed. The fastest initial step is to clean small patches (under one square meter) with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses surface growth and will return if the underlying moisture isn't controlled.

Given the recurring nature and associated health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—which could be a small plumbing leak, insufficient ventilation, or condensation from cold water pipes—and provide a targeted remediation plan. In many Dubai apartments, the wall cavity itself may be damp and require specialized drying equipment.

For the cough and headaches, consulting a doctor is prudent to rule out other causes and discuss the possible impact of mold exposure. They can provide appropriate treatment for the symptoms.

To prevent recurrence, run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers, wipe down wet surfaces, and consider a small dehumidifier for the space. The key is fixing the source of the moisture, not just the visible mold.
