AC mold on skirting board: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks and now there's a small patch of black and greenish mold on the skirting board behind the bed. With all the humidity lately in Dubai, I'm worried it's spreading inside the wall. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company?

That visible mold on your skirting board is a strong indicator of a larger moisture problem, especially with the ongoing AC leak. In Dubai's climate, this situation requires immediate attention.

The leak has saturated the carpet and likely the wall cavity behind it. Given the high humidity, mold can spread unseen within 24-48 hours. Bleach is a surface-level fix; it cannot penetrate porous materials like drywall or carpet backing to kill the root structure, and the chlorine can actually feed certain mold types. DIY cleaning often just temporarily removes the visible colony while the infestation continues growing out of sight.

You should call a professional inspection. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of water damage inside the wall, which is critical. The inspection will determine if the wall needs to be opened for proper drying and remediation. For a situation involving continuous moisture from an AC unit and potential wall infiltration, a professional assessment is strongly advised to prevent structural damage and potential health issues from airborne spores. Addressing the root cause—repairing the AC leak—is the only permanent solution.
