Could this bedroom mold be causing my husband's symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing along the corner of our bedroom wall where the wardrobe is. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and my husband has developed a persistent cough and itchy eyes that seem worse at night. Could this mold be the cause of his symptoms, and what’s the best way to handle it in a rental here?

Yes, the mold in your bedroom could very well be causing your husband's symptoms. The black speckles are a visual sign of a colony, which releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air. These are known irritants that commonly cause the exact symptoms you describe: a persistent cough, itchy eyes, and worsened nighttime allergies as he breathes the concentrated air for hours while sleeping.

The recent high humidity is a key factor. Dubai's climate, especially during summer months, creates immense condensation potential. This is amplified in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like the corner behind a wardrobe, where moist air gets trapped and condenses on cooler walls, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For a rental, your first step is to inform your landlord or property management company in writing. Dubai Law No. 26 of 2007, amended in 2013, and the Dubai Rental Code mandate that landlords must address issues that affect the property's habitability, which includes dampness and mold caused by structural problems. They are typically responsible for the remediation. Do not attempt to simply paint over it, as this will not address the moisture source and the mold will return.

Given the symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the exact moisture source (e.g., a hidden pipe leak, penetrating damp from the external wall, or condensation) and the mold species. A proper remediation plan involves fixing the water issue, safely removing the contaminated materials, and cleaning the area with appropriate antimicrobial agents. Until it's resolved, improve airflow by moving the wardrobe slightly away from the wall and use a dehumidifier in the room to help reduce the moisture level that the mold is feeding on.
