Urgent: black mold in closet spreading to clothes and walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks. My main worry is that it might be spreading behind the wall or into the clothes. How urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with cleaning first?

Visible mold growth in a humid Dubai closet is a sign of excess moisture that needs immediate attention. The black spots are likely due to condensation from your AC's cold wall meeting the warm, humid air, a common issue here.

For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Use a mixture of detergent and water, or a diluted vinegar solution. Discard any moldy porous items like cardboard boxes. Thoroughly clean and dry any clothes in the closet. The critical step is to identify and address the moisture source. Increase air circulation in the closet, consider a moisture absorber like silica gel, and ensure your AC is set to a consistently low humidity level.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, you notice a persistent musty smell, or you suspect it has spread behind the wall (check for staining or soft drywall), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Hidden growth can compromise indoor air quality and structural elements. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity and can perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation plan. In many cases here, the root cause is a combination of our high ambient humidity and insufficient ventilation or AC settings.
