Is black mold behind wardrobe urgent for health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. My wife has started getting headaches and a stuffy nose in the mornings. Is this something we need to get treated like, tomorrow-level urgent, or can it wait a week for our landlord to send someone?

The situation you're describing is a common and valid health concern in Dubai's climate. The combination of an exterior wall, high humidity, and poor air circulation behind furniture creates a perfect environment for mold growth. Your wife's symptoms—morning headaches and congestion—are typical reactions to mold exposure and indicate it is actively affecting your indoor air quality.

Given the visible spread and the onset of symptoms, this should be considered urgent. You should notify your landlord immediately. While an immediate, same-day emergency response may not be required, addressing it within the week is strongly advised to prevent further spread and potential health impacts.

For a landlord, the key is to fix the source of moisture, which is likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall. Simply wiping the mold away is ineffective; the wall must be properly treated with antimicrobial solutions to prevent regrowth. The affected area may also need to be repaired if the moisture has penetrated deeply.

A professional inspection can determine the extent of the issue and identify the exact mold species, which dictates the remediation protocol. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room and avoid disturbing the mold, as this can release more spores into the air.
