Could mold in our Mirdif villa cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I just pulled out our winter clothes from the storage cupboard under the stairs in our Mirdif villa and found a bunch of them covered in black spots. The whole area smells damp and earthy. Could this mold be causing their health issues and who can properly test for it?

Yes, the mold you discovered is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough. The black spots on clothing and the damp, earthy smell are classic indicators of an active mold colony. In Dubai's climate, enclosed spaces like under-stair cupboards are prone to condensation and high humidity, creating ideal conditions for mold growth. When disturbed, these molds release spores and microscopic fragments into the air, which are inhaled and can cause respiratory irritation, coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms, particularly in children.

For a situation like this, a visual inspection is a good start but insufficient. A professional assessment is needed to identify the mold species and the full extent of the contamination, which often spreads behind walls or under flooring. The inspection should include air quality testing to measure spore levels in your living areas compared to the outdoors, and surface sampling to identify the specific types of mold present. This is crucial, as some species are more strongly linked to respiratory issues than others.

Look for a provider that uses a certified microbiology lab for analysis, as this provides an objective, evidence-based diagnosis of the problem, not just a visual guess. They should provide a detailed report outlining the types and concentrations of mold found. This report is essential for planning an effective remediation strategy to properly remove the source of the problem and, more importantly, to identify and correct the underlying moisture issue that allowed the mold to grow in the first place. Resolving the moisture problem is the only way to prevent it from returning.
