How to remove and prevent mold in wardrobe corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom wardrobe, on the wall that faces the outside. This is our first winter here and I think the recent humidity plus the cold wall is causing it. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

That black mold in your wardrobe corner is a classic Dubai issue, especially in villas during the cooler, humid winter months. The outside wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the warmer, moist outside air causes condensation to form inside the wall. This dampness, combined with organic materials like wood or drywall, creates the perfect environment for mold.

For immediate cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For a small patch, scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and doesn't kill the roots. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan afterward. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed.

Prevention is the only long-term solution. First, improve air circulation inside the wardrobe by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the doors open. A small disposable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside can help absorb excess moisture. The most critical step is to address the condensation on the cold wall. This may require professional assessment to identify if additional wall insulation or a vapour barrier is needed to prevent the temperature differential.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a strong musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact condensation source and take air or swab samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. Simply cleaning the visible growth without solving the underlying moisture problem will guarantee its return.
