Is mold under my rug making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I just peeled back the corner of the rug in our master bedroom to find a large patch of black, fuzzy mold on the concrete floor underneath. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I'm worried the recent humidity has made it worse. How urgent is it that I get this professionally removed, and is it dangerous for them to be in the house right now?

That black mold under your rug is likely contributing to your children's coughing, especially in Dubai's high humidity which creates ideal conditions for mold growth. The damp concrete floor beneath the rug, combined with our climate, creates a perfect breeding ground.

For a situation like this, especially with visible growth and health symptoms, professional remediation is strongly recommended. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, as disturbing it will release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening the situation. The urgency is high due to the existing respiratory symptoms in children, who are more susceptible.

The key is to identify and fix the moisture source. In villas, this is often condensation from an AC unit, a hidden pipe leak, or moisture wicking up from the concrete slab itself. A professional inspection will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the origin. Simply cleaning the mold without solving the water problem guarantees it will return.

Once the source is fixed, the contaminated materials (the rug and likely the underlay) need to be safely removed and disposed of. The concrete must then be professionally cleaned and treated. To verify the home is safe post-remediation, consider an independent air quality test to confirm spore counts have returned to normal levels.
