How to permanently remove mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I just found a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where I store our winter blankets. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and it’s been so humid the last few weeks that the walls actually feel damp.
What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good and keep it from coming back, especially with our humidity?

Address the source first. The mold on your wall is a symptom of excess moisture, not the core problem. In Dubai's humidity, that dampness is likely from condensation due to the temperature difference between your cool, air-conditioned room and the humid outdoor air seeping in.
For the existing patch, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can scrub away visible growth. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid spore exposure. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes or fabrics that are contaminated, as mold roots deeply into them. Permanent removal requires controlling the humidity. First, identify and fix any specific water intrusion, like a small leak in the AC drain line or a crack in the wall. Then, focus on reducing ambient moisture. Ensure your AC unit is functioning correctly and set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to reduce condensation. A dedicated dehumidifier in that room, especially during humid summer months, is highly effective at maintaining levels below 60% RH, which inhibits mold growth. Improving air circulation in the closet by leaving space between the wall and your stored items or using a small fan can also help significantly. For a recurring or large-scale problem (over roughly one square meter), a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture sources within walls or under floors and to conduct air quality testing. This identifies the mold species and spore count, which is important information if your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and reputable remediation companies follow IICRC standards for proper containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination. |
