How to permanently remove and prevent closet mold in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has developed these black speckles, and my clothes have started smelling damp. We just had the weather get really humid again and I'm worried it's coming back, as I spotted a tiny patch in the same spot last year. What's the most effective way to clean this off the walls and prevent it from returning for good?

Closet mold on an interior wall is a classic symptom of trapped humid air condensing on cooler surfaces, especially common in Dubai villas during humid periods. The black speckles are likely a surface mold, but the damp smell on clothes confirms an ongoing moisture issue that needs to be addressed at its source.

For the existing growth, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the affected wall area with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, then wipe dry. Discard any badly contaminated porous items like cardboard boxes. Wash the affected clothes with a disinfecting laundry additive. This is a temporary fix if the root cause remains.

Permanently preventing its return requires managing humidity and improving air circulation. The wall is cold likely because the villa's exterior is heated by the sun while the interior is air-conditioned, creating a "cold bridge" where moisture condenses. First, ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to reduce the indoor humidity level. Then, you must get air moving in the closet. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a PC fan inside to vent stagnant, humid air. Avoid overpacking clothes, as this restricts airflow.

For a lasting solution, the wall itself may need attention. The most effective prevention is often improving the insulation of that exterior wall to prevent the surface from getting so cold, which is a structural modification. If the problem is persistent and covers a large area, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the precise condensation points and assess for any hidden moisture within the wall cavity that you cannot see. They can provide targeted remediation plans based on a concrete diagnosis rather than repeated surface cleaning.
