What's the kid-safe way to remove bathroom black mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I've just discovered a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bathroom where the shower door meets the tiles. We live in an older building in Jumeirah, and I'm worried the humidity is making it worse. What's the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this for good?

First, reduce the humidity immediately by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keeping the door open to improve airflow. For the visible patch, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a diluted hydrogen peroxide mix (3% concentration) is effective and kid-safe; avoid mixing chemicals. Apply it, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. Baking soda paste is another safe abrasive option.

In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant AC use, bathrooms are prime for mold because condensation builds up in grout and silicone seals. The black patch at the shower door is a common failure point. For a lasting solution, the old silicone sealant must be completely scraped out and replaced with a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone after the area is thoroughly dry and treated. This addresses the root cause, not just the surface growth.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has a musty odor permeating the room, or if the coughing persists after you've cleaned the visible growth, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to check for hidden dampness inside walls and perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding any potential health implications, especially for children. In many older Jumeirah buildings, poor ventilation or hidden leaks behind tiles are the real issue.
