How to remove and prevent closet mold on outside wall?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a few patches of black mold on the shoes and bags stored inside. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, and even though I run the AC constantly, that specific corner feels damp. What’s the most effective way to clean the affected items and prevent the mold from coming back in that spot?

First, remove all items from the closet and isolate the mold-affected shoes and bags outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. For non-porous items like leather bags, wipe them down with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. For porous materials like fabric shoes, professional cleaning may be necessary, as spores can penetrate deeply.

The core issue is likely a thermal bridge on that outside wall. In Dubai's high humidity, the constant cold from your AC meets the hot exterior wall, causing condensation inside the closet—a perfect environment for mold. Simply wiping the surface will not stop it from returning.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the condensation. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and leaving a small gap between the wall and your stored items. A renewable desiccant dehumidifier pouch placed in that corner can help absorb excess moisture. For a more permanent solution, consider having the thermal performance of that wall assessed; adding insulation can break the thermal bridge.

If the mold growth is extensive, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is advised to identify the exact species and the full extent of the moisture issue. In many cases, remediation and applying specialized anti-microbial coatings to the wall cavity are needed for a long-term solution.
