AC mold from leaky unit: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my master bedroom closet has been leaking on and off for a couple of months, and now I'm seeing fuzzy black spots on the back wall and our stored shoes. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaning products, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to make sure it's not spreading inside the wall?

Call a professional for inspection. Your description of a recurring leak, fuzzy black spots, and regrowth after a DIY attempt are strong indicators of a deeper issue. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can spread inside wall cavities behind the visible surface, which you cannot assess or properly treat yourself.

A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to map the full extent of water damage and hidden mold growth within the wall. The visible growth on the surface is often just a small part of the problem. The primary step is to permanently fix the AC leak; otherwise, the mold will always return regardless of cleaning.

Attempting a stronger DIY clean could aerosolize spores and spread them further. For a situation involving porous materials like drywall and shoes, professional assessment is strongly advised to protect your indoor air quality and prevent structural damage. The goal is to identify the source, contain the affected area, and safely remove contaminated materials.
