Black mold in bathroom causing cough: remove myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold along the bottom of our bathroom wall where the shower is. The bathroom doesn’t have a window and the exhaust fan seems pretty weak. I’m really worried about their health. What’s the best way to get rid of it properly and for good, and should I call a professional cleaning service here in Dubai for something like this?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is a common issue due to the high humidity and lack of ventilation in many bathrooms. The cough your children are experiencing is a typical reaction to mold spores, as they are more sensitive to airborne irritants.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully), and scrub the area. The key is to address the moisture source. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces. A dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce ambient moisture.

However, given the location along the shower base, the mold growth is likely due to a persistent moisture issue, potentially from water seepage behind the tiles or a faulty seal. Surface cleaning will not solve this. For recurring mold, suspected water damage, or any health concerns, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of the problem, which is critical for a permanent solution. Reputable firms in Dubai will provide a detailed report with lab analysis to confirm the mold type and verify that the remediation was successful.
