Is this black mold in my bedroom dangerous to remove?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled mold spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It’s the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it seems to have gotten much worse. Is this the dangerous "black mold" I hear about, and what's the proper way to get rid of it for good without just painting over it?

Any black mould requires caution during removal. The term "black mould" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins. However, many common black-coloured moulds, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger, are more frequent here and primarily cause allergic reactions or respiratory irritation, not the severe health risks sometimes associated with toxic black mould. Only a lab analysis can confirm the species and actual risk level.

The location you describe—an exterior wall behind furniture—is a classic hotspot in Dubai. It’s likely caused by a combination of high external humidity and a slight temperature difference on the inside of the wall (thermal bridging), leading to condensation that the wardrobe traps. Simply wiping or painting over it will fail, as the moisture source remains.

For a patch of that size and description, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize spores throughout your home. A proper remediation involves identifying and correcting the moisture source (often requiring a humidity assessment), isolating the area with physical barriers, using HEPA filtration to clean the air, and then removing the affected materials. The wall may need treatment with antimicrobial solutions.

In Dubai, look for a company that provides a clear diagnostic process, not just removal. They should explain the cause and offer post-remediation verification, often through lab testing, to confirm the mould is gone and the environment is dry and stable.
