How to safely clean mold and prevent dampness?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be because of the black stuff I just found growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. We keep the AC running all the time but the room still feels a bit damp, especially since we're on the ground floor in Jumeirah. What's the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop the moisture from coming back in the first place?

Black mold growth behind furniture in a ground-floor Jumeirah villa is a common issue, often linked to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. Your children's coughing could be a reaction to the spores. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can carefully clean it yourself by lightly misting the area with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, scrubbing gently, and ensuring the room is well-ventilated. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection.

However, given the location (behind a sofa, a known moisture trap) and the associated health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the exact species and the moisture source, which is critical. The dampness is likely due to a combination of our coastal climate and condensation from the AC unit, possibly exacerbated by thermal bridging in the wall.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. First, ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly; a clogged drain pipe is a frequent culprit. Use a dehumidifier in that room, especially during the more humid months. Improve air circulation by periodically moving the sofa away from the wall and using a fan. For a permanent solution, consider having a specialist assess the wall for possible insulation issues that cause condensation. Addressing the root cause of the moisture is the only way to prevent it from returning.
