Found mold under AC in Dubai bedroom. Safe to clean?« Back to Previous Page

My AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for a couple of weeks, but I just pulled back the corner of the carpet near the vent and found a patch of black and green mold on the concrete underneath. We’ve been sleeping in this room the whole time and I’m really worried. What’s the best way to handle this properly and safely in a Dubai villa?

Your situation requires immediate attention due to the hidden water damage and potential for mold to have spread within the AC unit and underfloor materials.

For a small, visible patch on concrete, you can carefully clean it with a solution of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry the area. However, given the leak has been ongoing for weeks and the mold is on porous concrete, the visible growth is likely just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture has almost certainly wicked into the surrounding carpet, underlay, and potentially the wall structure. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity prevents natural drying, this creates a persistent mold reservoir.

The critical first step is to stop the source. Have an HVAC technician repair the AC leak immediately. Do not attempt a significant cleanup until the moisture source is fixed, or the mold will return. For a proper remediation, the carpet and underlay must be lifted to assess the full extent. Given you've been sleeping in the room, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the mold species and the scope of contamination, which often requires removal of affected building materials. Look for a provider that uses lab analysis to confirm the environment is safe before reinstalling new flooring.
