How to permanently fix black grout in humid bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment's master shower has started turning black, and there's a constant damp, earthy smell. It's gotten a lot worse since the humidity really kicked in a couple of weeks ago. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bleach spray, but it just comes back within days. What is the most effective long-term solution to get rid of this for good?

Black grout in a Dubai bathroom is almost certainly mold, thriving on the constant humidity and condensation from showers and year-round AC use. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the roots penetrating deep into the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.

For a permanent fix, you must address both the moisture and the material. Start by ensuring your bathroom's mechanical ventilation is running optimally; run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet tiles and squeegeeing shower walls immediately after use is critical to remove standing water. If humidity is a chronic issue, a small dehumidifier can help reduce ambient moisture.

The grout itself is compromised. Scrubbing with a dedicated, acid-based grout cleaner (not just bleach) can be more effective, but the most reliable long-term solution is to remove the affected grout and re-grout using a high-quality, mold-inhibiting epoxy or urethane grout. These products are specifically formulated for high-humidity environments as they are non-porous and resist water penetration.

If the problem is extensive, recurs despite your best efforts, or the damp smell persists, the mold may have spread behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the full extent. They can use moisture meters and, if necessary, take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is important for determining the correct remediation protocol, especially in a living space.
