Safely remove mold from bedroom for child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m worried it’s because of the black spots I found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I think the humidity after last month’s heavy rains might have caused it. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold without putting my family’s health at risk?

The black spots you found are likely mold, which can definitely cause the coughing you're describing, especially in children. Jumeirah's high humidity, combined with recent rains and condensation from AC units, creates a perfect environment for it to grow behind furniture.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Ensure the room is well-ventilated and keep your children away until the area is completely dry.

However, since this is in a bedroom and your children are already symptomatic, a DIY approach may not address the root moisture problem or the potential for spores to have spread. The safest approach is a professional inspection to identify the exact moisture source—it could be a small leak from the recent rains or condensation from an AC duct running in the wall. They will also confirm the mold type, as some species are more allergenic than others.

For thorough remediation in a villa, professionals will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and remove the mold safely. Crucially, they will find and fix the underlying moisture issue; otherwise, it will return. After remediation, a post-test verifies the air quality is safe. This comprehensive approach is the most effective way to ensure your family's health is protected.
