Black spots behind wardrobe: DIY removal or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this when I was cleaning. It’s the wall that faces the outside of the building. What's the fastest way to deal with this properly, and should I get a professional company to test it or can I handle it myself?

Those black spots behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of mold growth, likely caused by condensation from your AC unit meeting the warm external wall, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. Given the location on an exterior wall and the health symptoms you're observing, a professional assessment is strongly advised.

For a problem of this size and potential cause, DIY is not recommended. Surface cleaning with bleach or vinegar only addresses the visible growth, not the moisture source or any mold inside the wall cavity. Disturbing it improperly can release a high concentration of spores into your bedroom air, potentially worsening your kids' coughing.

A certified inspector will use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact source of the dampness—whether it's a tiny crack in the building envelope, capillary action from the slab, or insufficient insulation. They can also take a tape lift sample for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol and informs you of any specific health risks.

The fastest and most proper way to deal with this is to hire a company that offers both diagnostics and remediation. They will contain the area, safely remove the affected materials, address the moisture intrusion, and verify with post-remediation testing that the space is truly clean. Look for a provider with IICRC-certified technicians and their own microbiology lab, as this ensures the entire process from inspection to clearance testing is handled to a verifiable standard.
