Is urgent mold removal needed behind my sofa?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind the sofa. It's an interior wall and we keep the AC on most of the time. I'm worried it's been there a while and we just didn't see it. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Any visible mold growth inside your villa requires prompt attention. Given its location on an interior wall with constant AC use, the source is almost certainly condensation due to the temperature differential between the cold wall and the humid Dubai air. This is a common issue here.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself, but avoid bleach. It's mostly water and can feed mold deeper in the wall while its fumes are hazardous indoors. Use a detergent solution or a dedicated mold cleaner, scrubbing thoroughly. However, this only addresses the surface. The mold's root structure (hyphae) is likely inside the drywall. Since you've just discovered it and are concerned it's been growing for a while, professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact moisture source and extent of the problem within the wall cavity. Simply cleaning the surface will result in it returning quickly if the underlying issue isn't resolved. Remediation often involves cutting out and replacing affected drywall to ensure complete removal. The urgency is high if occupants experience allergies or respiratory issues. Even if not, addressing it now prevents further property damage. For professional assessment, ensure the company provides a detailed report with lab identification of the mold type and clear remediation methodology, which is a standard expectation for reputable providers in the UAE. |
