Can I clean this AC mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water, and now I’m seeing a bunch of small black spots growing on the wall behind the bedroom curtain. It’s been there for maybe two weeks and I just spotted it today. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

It depends on the extent and cause. For a small, new patch caused by a minor AC condensate leak, you can manage it yourself.
However, bleach is not the right solution for porous surfaces like drywall or plaster. It only removes surface discoloration but does not kill the mold roots penetrating the material. For a small area, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a simple solution of detergent and water. Scrub gently, dry the area completely with a fan, and fix the AC leak immediately to prevent it from returning. Given the high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai, what you see on the wall is often just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture can travel within the wall cavity, fostering hidden growth. If the patch is larger than a square foot, has a musty odor, or the leak has been ongoing, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the full extent of the moisture damage and the mold species, as some types common in AC systems require specific protocols for safe removal. The goal is to solve the moisture problem first, then address the contamination it caused. |
