How to remove black mold from behind wardrobe myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe. It’s an interior wall and we never really move the furniture, but the AC condensation pipe runs right near there. What’s the most effective way to deal with this ourselves before we have to call a professional?

Black mold behind furniture on an interior wall with a nearby AC condensation pipe is a common issue in Dubai. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for condensation, which soaks into porous materials like drywall and paint, leading to mold growth. The first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to fully assess the extent.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent; avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper. Scrub the affected area, but be aware the mold has likely penetrated the paint and plaster. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely with a fan or dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth. However, the recurring moisture from the AC pipe is the root cause. Check that the condensate drain line is not clogged or leaking; this is a frequent source of hidden water damage. If the staining is extensive, has a strong musty odour, or returns quickly after cleaning, the wall cavity itself may be contaminated. In these cases, DIY methods are a temporary fix. Professional inspection is needed to identify the moisture source, assess the damage within the wall, and perform remediation that includes containment and air filtration to prevent cross-contamination. For villas, this is often necessary to ensure the problem is resolved at its source. |
