How to remove black mold from wall after AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black fuzzy spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. We had the AC unit in that room leaking a little bit a few weeks ago and I guess the moisture got trapped. What's the best way to deal with this myself, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

First, assess the extent. If the mold covers more than one square meter, or if it's returned after a previous cleaning, professional remediation is generally recommended per international guidelines.

For a smaller, contained area, you can handle it yourself. The key is safety and addressing the moisture source. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact.

Start by fixing the AC leak—this is non-negotiable. Until the source of moisture is stopped, the mold will return. A local HVAC technician can seal the leak and ensure the drain pan and line are clear.

For cleaning, mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with four parts water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and does not kill the root structure in porous materials like drywall. Gently scrub the area with a stiff brush and your vinegar solution. Allow it to dry completely in a well-ventilated space; using a dehumidifier or fan will help significantly in Dubai's humidity.

After cleaning, monitor the wall closely. If the discolouration or musty smell returns, the mold has likely penetrated deeper into the wallboard. In such cases, the affected section may need to be cut out and replaced to ensure it's truly gone.

Given the persistent humidity and constant AC use here, what appears as a small surface issue can often be more extensive behind the walls. If you have any respiratory sensitivities, or if the DIY approach doesn't resolve it, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is wise to confirm the full scope.
